Get into Better Shape for the 2014 Golf Season!

 In Fitness

This is a great time to get ourselves into better shape to hit the ball farther and more consistent for next season.

IT’S ALL ABOUT MOTIVATION! Why should I work out? Well! This is a good question. People are busy, things to do, places to be. Many people including myself need a driving force for why to work out because truthfully, I would rather participate in an action sport rather than pump weights. I used to workout years ago in my home gym and the fact that there was 4 of us doing it at the same time and a once a week instructor made it competitive and fun. You were committed to being there because other people had committed to it also. You didn’t want to let them down or be a quitter. We stopped 7 years ago due to everyone’s lives going different directions. Now! I am back working out again and this time I am motivated by the fact that I play a lot of hockey in the winter and I’m seeing a decline in my skating skills due to lack of leg strength, core stability and overall lack of stamina. I am too competitive to be the worst on the ice. So I did a test! To see how well I could do my old exercises from 7 years ago and I found I was down approx., 25% across the board. From reps to total weight I could handle. So…I started a month and a half ago and with some help from Kyle my assistant golf instructor, and some ideas from Gary Roberts, it actually feels pretty good again. Feeling improvement already.  I’m Pumped!…. It’s killin’ me! ….But I’m pumped!

YOU NEED TO FIND YOUR DRIVING FORCE! Look better, feel better, think clearer, outdrive friends, skate faster, jump higher or health reasons. It’s a great idea to get yourself into a gym program for the winter or invest in a home fitness instructor to help you out. You don’t need fancy equipment. A lot can be done with Tera bands, a couple free weights and your own body weight. The professional guidance would at least keep your workout time productive instead of just doing it. (this is where Kyle has really helped me) Get yourself assessed physically if possible. Do you need muscle tone or more flexibility to reach your goals? If you are going to bulk up be sure to stretch out after the workout. You can never be too flexible, so be sure to stretch as much as possible. Good triceps are a real key to width in the golf swing. Helps get rid of “gater arms” Watch out! Too many Bicep workouts kills the golf swing. Makes it narrow and slow. Lower back is a big power source in golf. Make it stronger but be careful not to hurt it. Good to get professional help on improving back strength just to be sure it’s correct for you. So even though I am working out to improve my hockey skills right now, in the long run my golf game will see the improvement also. Stronger legs, forearms, back, shoulders etc. All this will help me next spring when I tee it up on the 1st tee. Oh Yeah! I will keep you informed on how I’m doing!
